This season stripped the Winchesters of almost everything. They lose their father figure, Bobby Singer, and are forced to abandon the Impala to avoid high-tech Leviathan surveillance.

Castiel's new godhood is short-lived. The souls he absorbed contain the Leviathans—pre-human, unkillable monsters created by God and locked away for being too dangerous. They escape Castiel's body, infiltrate corporate America, and attempt to turn humanity into a domesticated food source.

Narrative Self-Reflexivity and Genre Play
The series kicks off with a simple, driving premise: Sam and Dean's father, John Winchester, has gone missing on a hunting trip. Sam, attempting to live a normal life at Stanford University, is pulled back into the family business after his girlfriend, Jessica, is murdered by the same yellow-eyed demon that killed his mother 22 years prior.
To save a dying Sam, Dean allows a fallen angel named Ezekiel (who turns out to be Gadreel) to possess Sam and heal him from the inside. Meanwhile, thousands of displaced, factionalized angels wander Earth, causing chaos.
